Historical context

The opium smokers knew it long before the historians when they wrote down the facts.
A naval machine designed and built in the second half of the nineteenth century to tend to a temporary necessity traverses the times of oblivion and rests between the pages of the history books until the present day.

In August 1864, the Peruvian government signs a contract with the British shipyard Lair & Brothers for the construction of a Monitor-type warship. Designed by Captain Cowper Phipps Coles, an officer of the Royal British Marine, this Monitor is equipped with a       1,130-ton brigantine rigging, a four-cauldron, 330-horsepower steam engine and a revolving turret armed with two rifled "Armstrong" cannons using 300-pound projectiles.

In late 1865, it is launched to the sea and named "Huascar", for the last governor of the Inca Empire.

In January of the following year, it sails out of the port of Birkenhead, Liverpool, on its inaugural journey. Among the cargo on board the Monitor, there is an Iguanodon model (extinct reptile from the prehistoric era), a work of the English sculptor Waterhouse Hawkins made under the direction of Doctor Richard Owen and commissioned by the Queen. The sculpture was going to be part of the Great Exhibition of Natural History in Lima. The naval route chosen by the captain was the following: crossing the Atlantic Ocean, hugging the Eastern coast of the South American continent, passing the Strait of Magellan, continuing towards the north to the port of Callao.

However, an intricate network of finely knit lines had been laid over the Monitor and its crew, tracing the pattern of a board game.
The dense atmosphere produced by tobacco smoke and anxiety...tell me, who will start this perverted game?

In a dark and forgotten basement of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, a painting on canvas by a little-known artist was found, depicting Queen Victoria (holding a little Iguanodon replica) on board the Monitor talking to a Paleontology student from the British Museum.

Principios de Febrero, 1868
El Monitor llega al puerto del Callao.

Beginning of February 1868
The Monitor arrives at the port of Callao.

This is when an event interrupts fora moment the intense activity at the port, just as two years ago, when Spanish enemy ships appeared or the feared yellow fever plague. This time, it's an old fisherman who brings the good news: a fabulous fish had been trapped in the amongst the other fish.

The children stop playing and come running to see.

The Italian shopkeeper and his wife, dark-skinned and of striking beauty, hurry up.

That fish named Vincent van Gogh had only been seen in dreams and in rum-and love- drunk minds. Now he manifests his real and moribund existence, portrayed by master photographer Emile Garreaud.

Two nurses also come closer with child-like curiosity and coquettish smiles, forgetting to look after their patient, an unknown and confused man who had been referred to the Guadalupe Hospital a few days before from a ship that had appeared mysteriously behind San Lorenzo Island. It was known that it was the new Monitor acquired by the Government, but when they went on board, they found a hostile, pitiful, unbearable atmosphere and couldn't find any of the crew... except one:

He was walking in circles on the red pinewood deck. Later, laying down, he "wrapped himself up like a magic carpet" and immediately behaved like a prehistoric monster.

Poor idiot, they had to trick him with native fruit to catch and isolate him in a special room. They asked him questions and he answered with difficulty, his intermittent words leading to a fertile ground of imagination and stupidity.

The two nurses got back to their post at the hospital.

Their patient, in a moment of lucidity, bit off his tongue and swallowed it.
This is the last thing he wrote:
                                      - there is - one - single - God - and - Mohammed - is - his - prophet -
